The story of the SIMAD AI Institute is deeply rooted in the evolution of SIMAD University — a university built on a strong foundation of academic excellence, leadership development, and service to society. From its earliest days, SIMAD has believed in the transformative power of knowledge and innovation, continually adapting to meet the changing needs of Somalia’s education and development landscape
Nurturing Innovation
As Somalia entered a period of national transformation and increasing adoption of technology and digital governance, SIMAD University recognized the need to create a space where students and young professionals could explore emerging technologies.
This vision led to the establishment of SIMAD iLab, the university’s first Innovation Lab. The iLab became a vibrant environment where students built prototypes, experimented with digital tools, collaborated on projects, and gained hands-on experience in innovation
Responding to National Transformation
Somalia’s shift toward smarter systems, modern infrastructure, and data-driven public services — clearly articulated in the Somali National Transformation Plan (SNTP) 2025–2030 — created a growing demand for institutions capable of leading in emerging technologies.
The success of SIMAD iLab revealed a larger opportunity: the need for a dedicated academic institution to advance Artificial Intelligence research, support policy development, and deliver rigorous capacity building
A National Milestone
In response to this national need and inspired by global shifts toward AI-driven education and development, SIMAD University established the SIMAD AI Institute — the first-ever university-based Artificial Intelligence institute in Somalia.
Built on the strong foundation of the iLab, the Institute serves as a national hub for AI learning, research, innovation, and ethical technology development. It brings together researchers, students, policymakers, and partners committed to exploring how AI can support education, strengthen public services, and contribute to Somalia’s economic and social development.

While grounded in academic rigor, the story of the SIMAD AI Institute is deeply human. It reflects the creativity of Somali youth, the perseverance of educators, and the collective ambition to build a better future.
