Somalia Joins the East Africa AI Alliance

Somalia has officially joined the East Africa AI Alliance, marking an important and encouraging step in the country’s engagement with regional cooperation on artificial intelligence and digital transformation. This development reflects Somalia’s growing presence in regional technology dialogue and its commitment to learning, collaboration, and responsible innovation.

The announcement was made during a regional AI conference held in October 2025, which was officially opened by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The conference brought together policymakers, academic institutions, researchers, and technology leaders from across East Africa to discuss how artificial intelligence can support development, education, governance, and inclusive growth.

Notably, SIMAD AI Institute was the only AI institute representing Somalia at the conference. This participation highlighted the role that Somali academic institutions are beginning to play in regional conversations on AI, research, and digital skills. While SIMAD AI Institute has not yet been officially designated as the National AI Hub, discussions are ongoing, and a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected in the coming weeks.

Reflecting on Somalia’s participation, a representative of SIMAD AI Institute leadership stated:

“Somalia’s engagement with the East Africa AI Alliance is a meaningful step forward. Being the only AI institute representing the country at this conference reflects the trust placed in academic institutions to contribute responsibly to regional AI discussions. Our focus remains on education, research, and collaboration that serves people and institutions across Somalia.”

Membership in the East Africa AI Alliance connects Somalia to a regional network of universities, research centers, innovators, and policymakers who are working together to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed and used in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and socially beneficial. Through this alliance, Somalia gains opportunities for shared learning, joint initiatives, research collaboration, and capacity building aligned with regional priorities.

For Somali youth and educators, this milestone opens doors to greater regional exposure, knowledge exchange, and participation in cross-border AI initiatives. For institutions such as SIMAD University and the SIMAD AI Institute, it strengthens pathways for academic partnerships, research collaboration, and contribution to regional AI programs.

This moment represents more than participation in a conference. It signals Somalia’s readiness to engage thoughtfully with emerging technologies, to learn from regional peers, and to contribute its own perspectives and experiences. As discussions continue and partnerships take shape, Somalia looks forward to playing an active role in shaping a responsible and people-centered AI future for East Africa.
